Maitrī
is a Sanskrit word to describe unconditional acceptance and loving-kindness towards ourselves and everyone around us. To practice maitri is to genuinely care for and honor every individual for who they are, without any judgement and agenda to change anything about them.

Warm Welcome! I’m Phyu, and I’m so glad you’re here.
I’ve always been drawn to birth. As a child, instead of daydreaming, I often imagined my own birth, wondering how my mother and I bonded on that very first day. I was so obsessed with birth that I would often roleplay as a breastfeeding mother while cradling my doll, curious about my mother’s birthing experience.
As an adult, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology & Sociology and delved into exploring people’s lived realities in tough life changing situations such as, war, forced displacement and resettlement in a new country. I wanted to make sense about my own story, which has origins in war-torn Myanmar. Anthropological fieldwork taught me to hold space for people’s stories and emotions and to raise my voice against injustice. That was when I discovered my passion to care for others with my heart and hands.
Motherhood is a dance with life’s fires of transformation…it’s a mysterious and winding path that brings us to the person we’re meant to be. The birth of my son brought me closer to my inner world, where I discovered how much I want to ‘be present’ for individuals who are pregnant, birthing, experiencing or anticipating loss of their child, and have had tough experiences with birth.
When I discovered the role of a Doula, everything finally CLICKED. I love my job: the complexities, the mysteries, and the opportunity to journey alongside birthing folks as they navigate their transitions. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide a safe, supportive, and validating space for families to embrace the unpredictability of life and the vulnerabilities each of us hold. As a doula, I am not focused on equipping families with just what they need to survive childbirth. My focus is on giving families the space and unconditional support they need to feel empowered about themselves and as parents.
Beyond being a doula, I’m also a person-centered mental health counselor (in training) and a bodyworker practicing massage and Shamanic Craniosacral bodywork that aim to regulate our parasympathetic nervous system. When I’m not attending births or helping someone relax, you can find me in the kitchen cooking up delicious things, being silly with my family or teaching my toddler how to talk to trees.

My Values
01.
Loving-Kindness
Loving-kindness is a compass that propels empathy in my Doula work. I honor all birthing individuals and their stories by opening myself to compassion, acceptance, and presence.
02.
Intersectionality
Every person’s lived experience is unique based on their identities (i.e, race, sex, gender, class, size, status, income, mental health). I embrace every birthing person’s differences to fully understand the barriers and burdens along their birthing journey.
03.
Collective
Honoring the collective, being at service to others, and being received by them enriches me. Our roots may only grow strong in common ground with others. I believe in the magic of gathering together and creatively driving positive change.
